Theobromine

Theobromine is a natural alkaloid compound found in cocoa beans, tea leaves, and other plants. It belongs to the class of xanthine alkaloids, which also includes caffeine and theophylline. Theobromine is often used as a mild stimulant and diuretic.

 

Theobromine is used in the following conditions-

  • Theobromine is sometimes used as a cough suppressant, as it can relax the muscles in the bronchi and help to reduce coughing.

  • Theobromine can help to increase urine production and may be used to treat conditions such as edema, congestive heart failure, and high blood pressure.

  • Mood enhancement: Theobromine has been shown to increase levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, which can help to improve mood and reduce anxiety.

  • Theobromine has been found to increase oxygen uptake and improve endurance in athletes.

 

  • The dosage of theobromine can vary depending on the intended use, as well as individual factors such as age, weight, and medical history. Therefore, it is important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the product label.
  • In general, when theobromine is used as a cough suppressant, doses of 100-300 mg may be taken up to four times per day. When used as a diuretic, doses of 250-500 mg may be taken up to three times per day.

Theobromine is generally considered safe, it can however, cause some side effects, including:
