Ceftiofur

Ceftiofur is a veterinary antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to the disruption of cell wall formation and bacterial cell death.

Ceftiofur is indicated for the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni. It is also used for foot rot and acute postpartum metritis in cattle.

For Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD):

  • Calves (2 to 8 weeks): Administer 1.5 mg/kg body weight once daily.
  • Cattle (over 8 weeks): Administer 1.1 mg/kg body weight once daily.

For Foot Rot and Acute Postpartum Metritis:

  • Cattle: Administer 2.2 mg/kg body weight once daily.

Common adverse reactions associated with Ceftiofur may include:

  • Injection site swelling and pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased feed intake
  • Increased respiratory rate
  • Hypersensitivity: Cephalosporin antibiotics, including Ceftiofur, may cause hypersensitivity reactions. In case of an allergic reaction, discontinue use and administer appropriate treatment.
  • Prohibited in Dairy Cattle: Do not use in dairy cattle 20 months of age or older or in calves to be processed for veal.

Contraindication

Ceftiofur is contraindicated in animals with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. It should not be used in animals with a history of allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics.
