Desferrioxamine Mesilate

Desferrioxamine Mesilate is an iron chelator belonging to the class of drugs known as chelating agents. It works by binding to excess iron in the body and forming a stable complex that is excreted in the urine. This helps to reduce the amount of iron that can cause damage to the body's tissues.

Desferrioxamine Mesilate is indicated for the treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions in patients with transfusion-dependent anemias such as beta-thalassemia major and sickle cell disease. It is also used in the treatment of acute iron poisoning.

A dose of 1000 mg should be administered initially. This may be followed by 500 mg every 4 hours for two doses. Depending upon the clinical response, subsequent doses of 500 mg may be administered every 4-12 hours. The total amount administered should not exceed 6000 mg in 24 hours.
