Doxycycline

Doxycycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic of tetracycline group. It kills bacteria by inhibiting their protein synthesis.

Doxycycline is indicated in the following diseases-

  • Bronchitis, Tonsillitis, Influenza, Sinusitis, Tracheitis.
  • Chlamydia infections.
  • Malaria.
  • Cholera, Traveler's diarrhea, Shigella dysentery.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  •  Impetigo, furunculosis, inclusion conjunctivitis, brucellosis, tularemia, cellulitis, acne and Q-fever.
 

200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days.

Doxycycline has the following side effects-

Patient should be careful so that he/she does not take expired medicine. Expired doxycycline is highly hepatotoxic and can even be fatal.

Contraindication

Patients who are hypersensitive to doxycycline or any drug of tetracycline class should not take doxycycline.

Doxycycline should not be taken with milk, antacids or mineral supplements. Children under 12 years should not be prescribed tetracycline.

Doxycycline is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
