Fexofenadine Hydrochloride

Fexofenadine hydrochloride is a histamine H1-receptor  antagonist. It is formulated as a capsule or tablet for oral administration.

Fexofenadine HCl is indicated or the following conditions-

  • Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
  • Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

  • Adults and children aged 12 and up: Fexofenadine HCL is taken at a dose of 60 mg twice a day or 180 mg once a day. In patients with impaired renal function, a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is indicated.
  • Children 6 to 11 Years: Fexofenadine HCL is taken twice a day at a dose of 30 mg. In pediatric patients with impaired renal function, a daily dose of 30 mg is indicated as a starting dose.

Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria

  • Adults and Children 12 Years and Older: The recommended dose of Fexofenadine HCL is 60 mg twice daily. A dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended as the starting dose in patients with decreased renal function.
  • Children 6 to 11 Years: The recommended dose of Fexofenadine HCL is 30 mg twice daily. A dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended as the starting dose in pediatric patients with decreased renal function.

Side effects associated with the use of fexofenadine include-

  • Cold/Flu
  • Nausea
  • Dysmenorrhea
  • Somnolence
  • Dyspepsia
  • Fatigue/ Asthenia

Co–administration of fexofenadine hydrochloride with ketoconazole and erythromycin led to increased plasma levels of fexofenadine hydrochloride.

 

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.

There is no known contraindications of Fexofenadine HCl in terms of food and drinks.
