Alverine Citrate

Alverine Citrate is classified as an antispasmodic agent. Its mechanism of action involves acting directly on the smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the colon. Alverine Citrate exerts its effect by selectively inhibiting smooth muscle contractions, leading to the relaxation of the gastrointestinal muscles. This action helps alleviate symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Alverine Citrate is indicated for the relief of smooth muscle spasms, in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, painful diverticular disease of the colon and primary dysmenorrhoea.

  • The recommended dose is typically 60 mg taken two or three times daily before meals.
  • Dosage adjustments may be made based on the individual's response and the severity of symptoms.

Adverse reactions associated with the use of the drug include-

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders: Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment, as there is limited information on the use of Alverine Citrate in these populations.
  • Central Nervous System Effects: Patients may experience dizziness, and caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery until the individual's response to the medication is known.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Use during pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk. Limited data are available on the safety of Alverine Citrate in pregnant and lactating women.
  • Elderly Population: Caution is advised in the elderly, and lower doses may be appropriate due to potential age-related decreases in hepatic and renal function.
  • Discontinuation of Treatment: Abrupt discontinuation of treatment is generally not recommended. Tapering the dosage may be considered, especially in patients on prolonged therapy.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

Alverine Citrate is contraindicated in-

  • Paralytic ileus
  • Intestinal obstruction
