Gallamine Triethiodide

Gallamine Triethiodide is a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent that competitively inhibits acetylcholine from binding to nicotinic receptors at the motor endplate, resulting in muscle relaxation.

Gallamine Triethiodide is indicated for:

  • Producing skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation.
  • The dosage of Gallamine Triethiodide should be individualized based on factors such as patient weight, age, and overall health.
  • Administration is typically through intravenous injection.

Most Common Adverse Reactions associated with gallamine include-

  • Respiratory depression
  • Hypotension
  • Bradycardia
  • Histamine release (flushing, hypotension)
  • Respiratory Depression:

    • Gallamine Triethiodide may cause respiratory depression, necessitating close monitoring of ventilatory parameters.
  • Hypotension and Bradycardia:

    • Caution is advised, particularly in patients susceptible to hypotension or bradycardia. Administer fluids and, if necessary, appropriate treatment.
  • Histamine Release:

    • Gallamine Triethiodide may induce histamine release, leading to flushing and hypotension. Be prepared to manage potential allergic reactions.

Contraindication

Gallamine Triethiodide is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.

Gallamine Triethiodide is contraindicated in patients with-

  • Personal or familial history of malignant hyperthermia.
  • Presence of pre-existing neuromuscular disease.
