Gestodene

Gestodene is a synthetic progestogen, a member of the class of progestins. Gestodene primarily exerts its contraceptive effects by inhibiting ovulation. It also causes changes in cervical mucus, making it less favorable for sperm penetration, and alters the endometrium, reducing the likelihood of implantation.

Gestodene is indicated for use as an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy.

  • The recommended dosage of gestodene is typically one tablet taken orally once a day.
  • Follow the prescribed regimen as directed by the healthcare provider.

Adverse reactions associated with gestodene may vary among individuals. Common to less common adverse reactions may include:

  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache
  • Weight gain
  • Mood changes
  • Changes in libido
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Changes in menstrual flow
  • Skin reactions
  • Thromboembolic Disorders: Women using gestodene-containing contraceptives have a higher risk of developing thromboembolic disorders. Healthcare providers should carefully assess individual risk factors before prescribing.
  • Cardiovascular Risk: Smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular events in women using oral contraceptives. Women over 35 years old who smoke should avoid gestodene-containing contraceptives.
  • Cancer Risks: Long-term use of oral contraceptives has been associated with a slightly increased risk of breast and cervical cancer. Regular monitoring and assessment of risk factors are advised.
  • Liver Function: Oral contraceptives may impact liver function. Regular liver function tests are recommended, especially in women with a history of liver disease.

Contraindication

  • Contraindicated in the presence of severe liver disease or hepatic dysfunction.
  • Contraindicated in cases of undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • Contraindicated in individuals with current or past history of breast cancer.
