Amlexanox

Amlexanox is a tricyclic imidazole derivative and an anti-inflammatory agent. Its exact mechanism of action in treating recurrent aphthous ulcers is not completely understood, but it is thought to inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes from mast cells.

Amlexanox oral paste is indicated for the treatment of recurrent aphthous ulcers, also known as canker sores.

The recommended dose of Amlexanox oral paste is a thin layer applied to the affected area four times a day after meals and at bedtime. Patients should be instructed not to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after applying the paste.

The most common adverse reactions associated with Amlexanox oral paste are:

  • Burning or stinging sensation at the site of application
  • Numbness or tingling sensation of the tongue
  • Headache

Before using Amlexanox oral paste, patients should be advised of the following:

  • Amlexanox oral paste is for oral use only and should not be swallowed.
  • Patients should avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after applying the paste.
  • Patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Amlexanox oral paste should not use this medication.
  • If symptoms do not improve within 10 days of treatment, patients should consult a healthcare provider.
  • Amlexanox oral paste has not been studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and its safety in these populations is not known.
  • There is no information available on the safety and efficacy of Amlexanox oral paste in pediatric patients.
  • Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any other medications they are taking, as drug interactions have not been studied.
