5 Aminosalicylic Acid

5-Amino salicylic acid is an orally available medication that acts topically rather than systemically by inhibiting intestinal cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases. As a result, production of inflammatory compounds is diminished.

5-Amino salicylic acid is indicated for the treatment + maintenance of remission of the following diseases-

  • Ulcerative colitis 
  • Crohn's disease

For the treatment of ulcerative colitis:

  • For long-acting oral dosage form:
    • Adults: 800 milligrams (mg) 3 times a day.
    • Children 5 years of age and older: Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The dose is usually not more than 2400 mg per day, divided in 2 doses.
    • Children younger than 5 years of age: Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

The commonly reported adverse effects are

  • headache
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • asthenia
  • dyspepsia
  • vomiting
  • pruritus
  • If you get severe stomach discomfort, stomach cramps, or bloody diarrhea, stop taking 5-aminosalicylic acid and notify your doctor right away (may occur with fever, headache, and skin rash).
  • 5-aminosalicylic acid should be given in pregnancy only if the potential benefits justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
  • Caution is advised when it is administered to a nursing mother.
  • Caution should be exercised when using 5-aminosalicylic acid in patients with known renal dysfunction or history of renal disease, and liver disease.

Contraindication

This medication is contraindicated to patients having hypersensitivity to salicylates or to any other component of the formulation.
