Oxyphenonium Bromide

Oxyphenonium Bromide is an anticholinergic agent. Oxyphenonium Bromide works by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the body. By doing so, it inhibits the muscarinic receptors in smooth muscles and exocrine glands, leading to relaxation of smooth muscles and reduced secretions.

Oxyphenonium Bromide is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Treatment of gastrointestinal spasms and cramps.
  • Relief of symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Adjunctive therapy in the management of peptic ulcers.
  • Preoperative medication to reduce salivary, tracheobronchial, and pharyngeal secretions.
  • To control excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

The dosage of Oxyphenonium Bromide should be individualized based on the patient's condition and response to treatment. The following dosages are commonly used:

  • For gastrointestinal spasms and cramps: 5mg to 10mg orally, 3 to 4 times a day.
  • For irritable bowel syndrome: 5mg to 10mg orally, 3 to 4 times a day.
  • For peptic ulcers: 5mg to 10mg orally, 3 to 4 times a day.
  • For preoperative medication: 5mg to 10mg orally, 1 hour before surgery.
  • For hyperhidrosis: 5mg to 10mg orally, 3 to 4 times a day.

Adverse reactions to Oxyphenonium Bromide may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Urinary retention
  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, hives)

Before using Oxyphenonium Bromide, consider the following warnings and precautions:

  • Caution should be exercised in patients with glaucoma, urinary retention, and gastrointestinal obstructive disorders.
  • Oxyphenonium Bromide may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. Patients should be advised to avoid these activities if they experience drowsiness or blurred vision.
  • Use with caution in elderly patients, as they may be more sensitive to anticholinergic effects.
  • In case of an allergic reaction or severe adverse effects, discontinue the medication and seek medical attention immediately.

Contraindication

Oxyphenonium Bromide is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to oxyphenonium bromide or other anticholinergic agents such as-

Oxyphenonium Bromide is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • Glaucoma or a predisposition to angle-closure glaucoma.
  • Obstructive uropathy or urinary retention.
  • Intestinal atony or paralytic ileus.
