Benzathine Penicillin

Benzathine Penicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic of the beta lactam class. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. This formulation has a slow onset of action and long duration of action.

Benzathine Penicillin is indicated for the following infections-

  • Rheumatic fever
  • Acute otitis media
  • Syphillis

Benzathine Penicillin is available as intramuscular injection. The usual adult dose is 900 mg to 1.8 g per injection.

The usual side effects are-

  • Burning at injection site
  • Local pain
  • Muscle soreness
  • Fever
  • This medication should not be injected IV or intra-arterial admin or near major peripheral nerves of blood vessels.
  • Renal impairment may occur.

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to beta lactam antibiotics such as-

Benzathine Penicillin should not be used during pregnancy unless the physician believes it is clinically necessary.
