Benzathine Penicillin
Benzathine Penicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic of the beta lactam class. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. This formulation has a slow onset of action and long duration of action.
Benzathine Penicillin is indicated for the following infections-
- Rheumatic fever
- Acute otitis media
- Syphillis
Benzathine Penicillin is available as intramuscular injection. The usual adult dose is 900 mg to 1.8 g per injection.
The usual side effects are-
- Burning at injection site
- Local pain
- Muscle soreness
- Fever
- This medication should not be injected IV or intra-arterial admin or near major peripheral nerves of blood vessels.
- Renal impairment may occur.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to beta lactam antibiotics such as-
Benzathine Penicillin should not be used during pregnancy unless the physician believes it is clinically necessary.
