Remarks

Irbesartan

Irbesartan belongs to a class of drugs called Angiotensin II receptor blockers or ARBs. It prevents Angiotensin II from binding to Angiotensin receptor 1 and hence antagonizing it's effects

Irbesartan is indicated for the following physiological conditions-

  • Hypertension

It is also indicated as part of an antihypertensive medicinal product regimen to treat renal dysfunction in adult patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

  • The usual recommended initial and maintenance dose is 150 mg once daily, with or without food.
  • Irbesartan at a dose of 150 mg once daily generally provides a better 24 hour blood pressure control than 75 mg. However, initiation of therapy with 75 mg could be considered, particularly in hemodialysed patients and in the elderly over 75 years.
  • In patients insufficiently controlled with 150 mg once daily, the dose of irbesartan can be increased to 300 mg, or other antihypertensive agents can be added.

Common side effects associated with irbesartan are as follows-

  • Dizziness
  • Hypotension
  • Nausea
  • Myalgia
  • Asthenia

  • During the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, medications that act on the renin-angiotensin system impair fetal renal function and increase fetal and newborn morbidity and death.
  • Drugs that suppress the renin-angiotensin system, as well as diuretics, can cause changes in renal function, including acute renal failure. Patients with renal artery stenosis, chronic kidney disease, severe congestive heart failure, or volume depletion (e.g., patients with renal artery stenosis, chronic kidney disease, severe congestive heart failure, or volume depletion) may be at a higher risk of developing acute renal failure on Irbesartan

Contraindication

  • Irbesartan is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Irbesartan or other ARBs, such as-
  • Irbesartan should not be co-administered with the following drug in patients with diabetes and renal impairment-

Losartan is contraindicated in the following health conditions-
