Sulphaquinoxaline

Sulphaquinoxaline is a veterinary drug belonging to the class of sulphonamides. Sulphaquinoxaline acts by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid in bacteria and protozoa. It competitively inhibits the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase, which is involved in the production of folic acid. By blocking this enzyme, sulphaquinoxaline disrupts the growth and replication of microorganisms, leading to their elimination.

Sulphaquinoxaline is indicated for the treatment and prevention of various bacterial and protozoal infections in animals, including:

  • Coccidiosis in poultry and livestock
  • Enteritis in poultry
  • Bacterial infections in poultry, livestock, and companion animals
  • The dosage of sulphaquinoxaline is determined by the veterinarian based on the type of infection, species of animal, and its weight.
  • The drug is typically administered orally, either in the form of a powder or in water.
  • The specific dosage instructions and treatment duration should be followed as prescribed by the veterinarian.

The following side effects may occur in animals treated with Sulphaquinoxaline-

  • Allergic reactions (ranging from mild skin reactions to severe anaphylaxis)
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., diarrhea, vomiting)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Liver toxicity
  • Hematological abnormalities (e.g., anemia, thrombocytopenia)
  • Photosensitivity reactions

  • Sulphaquinoxaline should only be used under the supervision of a veterinarian and according to the prescribed dosage.
  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. In case of accidental exposure, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Use caution when administering sulphaquinoxaline to animals with known hypersensitivity to sulphonamides or a history of allergic reactions.
  • Adequate hydration should be ensured during treatment to prevent crystalluria and kidney damage.
  • Concurrent use of other drugs that may interact with sulphaquinoxaline should be evaluated and avoided if necessary.
  • Prolonged or excessive use of sulphaquinoxaline may result in bacterial or protozoal resistance.
  • Keep sulphaquinoxaline out of reach of children and unauthorized personnel.
  • Dispose of any unused or expired medication according to local regulations.

Contraindication

  • Sulphaquinoxaline is contraindicated in animals with known hypersensitivity to sulphaquinoxaline or  sulphonamides such as-

  • It should not be administered to animals with severe liver or kidney dysfunction.
  • Pregnant or lactating animals should be treated with caution, and the potential risks and benefits should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
  • The use of sulphaquinoxaline is generally not recommended in young animals, particularly in species prone to sulphonamide toxicity.
