Tropicamide

Tropicamide belongs to the class of drugs called anticholinergics and antimuscarinics. It is an antimuscarinic agent that works by blocking the effects of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the brain that controls pupil size and muscle function.

  • Tropicamide is used to dilate the pupils for eye examinations, including diagnostic procedures such as refraction, fundus examination, and visual acuity measurement.
  • Tropicamide provides clinically significant mydriasis with partial cycloplegia.

One to two drops in the conjunctival sac. The onset of action with Tropicamide Solution occurs within 15 minutes followed by maximum effect within 60 minutes. Clinically significant dilation, inhibition of pupillary light response, and partial cycloplegia last 3 hours. Mydriasis will reverse spontaneously with time, typically in 6 to 8 hours. However, in some cases, complete recovery may take up to 24 hours

  • The most common adverse reactions of tropicamide are increased intra-ocular pressure, stinging, dry mouth, burning, or itching of the eye(s), photophobia, blurred vision, and conjunctivitis.

  • Tropicamide should be used with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, as it may increase intraocular pressure and precipitate an angle-closure attack.
  • Patients with a history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to antimuscarinic agents or any component of the formulation should not use tropicamide.
  • Tropicamide may cause blurred vision and other visual disturbances that can impair the ability to perform hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery. Patients should be advised to avoid such activities until their vision has returned to normal.
  • Tropicamide may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some patients. Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol or other sedative medications while using tropicamide.
  • Tropicamide should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, thyroid dysfunction, or gastrointestinal obstruction.

Contraindication

Tropicamide is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the formulation.

Tropicamide Solution should not be used in patients with angle-closure glaucoma or in those with narrow angles in whom dilation of the pupil may precipitate an attack of angle-closure glaucoma.
