Benzyl Penicillin + Procaine Penicillin
Benzyl penicillin +Procaine penicillin is a mixture of beta lactam antibiotics of two different consistency, that kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is injected in a muscle.
Benzyl penicillin +Procaine penicillin is indicated for the following conditions-
- Bejel
- Pinta
- STDs (Syphilis, Gonorrhea)
- Yaws
- Neurosyphilis
- Pneumonia
- Diphtheria
- Anthrax
- Children over 25kg & Adults: 4,00,000 units once or twice daily.
- The dosage for children under 25 kg should be reduce proportionally.
- Doses may be doubled in severe cases.
- Intramuscular injection is the only route of administration of Procaine Penicillin.
- This should be injected into the buttocks, thigh, deltoid, or triceps muscle through intramuscular injection. If continuous injection is required, the administration site should be altered.
The common side effects include-
- Pain at injection site
- Phlebitis
- Rash
- Allergic reactions
Precaution should be exercised while treating patients of the following class-
- Renal impairment
- Chronic heart failure
- Infants & Elderly
