Gatifloxacin + Loteprednol Etabonate
Gatifloxacin + Loteprednol Etabonate is a combination medication typically use as topical ophthalmic medication. Gatifloxacin is an antibiotic, similar to the commonly used Ciprofloxacin, that inhibits bacterial topoisomerase. As a result DNA synthesis comes to a halt.
Loteprednol Etabonate is a corticosteroid that is used topically on the eyes to reduce inflammation.
This medication is indicated for the following conditions-
- Conjunctivitis
- Bacterial eye infection
- Post-operative eye inflammation
The usual dosage is one or two drops of sterile ophthalmic suspension into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) every four to six hours.
How to apply eye drops:
The most common side effects associated with Gatifloxacin + Loteprednol Etabonate are-
- Eye irritation
- Excessive tearing
- Headache
- Taste disturbance
- Prolonged use of this medication may cause an increase of intra-ocular pressure and growth of resistant organisms.
- When a steroid has been used or is being used to treat a persistent corneal ulcer, fungus invasion must be considered.
- If the redness or itching worsens, the patient should be recommended to see a doctor.
- Patients who wear soft contact lenses and do not have red eyes should be told to wait at least ten minutes after infusing it before putting their contact lenses in.
Contraindication
- It is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to gatifloxacin/other fluoroquinolones or any component of the medication such as-
- Contraindicated in viral infections of the eye
