Cefpodoxime

Cefpodoxime is a 3rd generation cephalosporin that kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Cefpodoxime is indicated for-

  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute community acquired pneumonia
  • Pharyngitis or tonsillitis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis

Cefpodoxime is available as tablets, capsule, powder for suspension and pediatric drops.

Indications and Dosage:
Oral:
Acute otitis media
Child: ≥15 days 4 mg/kg 12 hrly. Max: 200 mg daily.

Oral:
Skin and soft tissue infections
Adult: 200-400 mg 12 hrly.
Child: ≥15 days 4 mg/kg 12 hrly. Max: 200 mg daily.

Oral:
Respiratory tract infections, Urinary tract infections
Adult: 100-200 mg 12 hrly.
Child: ≥15 days 4 mg/kg 12 hrly. Max: 200 mg daily.

Oral:
Uncomplicated gonorrhoea
Adult: 200 mg as a single dose.

Side effects associated with the use of cefpodoxime include-

  • gastrointestinal disorders such as-
    • diarrhea
    • nausea
    • vomiting and
    • abdominal pain
  • rash, urticaria and itching
  • Severe and occasionally deadly hypersensitivity responses have been documented with all beta-lactam antibacterial drugs.
  • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis, including pseudomembranous colitis and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, have been linked to the use of practically all antibiotics, including cefepime, and symptoms can range from mild diarrhea to deadly colitis.
  • Cefpodoxime should be used with caution in individuals who are taking powerful diuretics at the same time

  • Cefpodoxime, like other antibiotics, can cause non-susceptible organisms to grow out of control.
