Lomefloxacin

Lomefloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis. It is a bactericidal antibiotic.

Oral Lomefloxacin is indicated for the following infections-

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Skin infections

Lomefloxacin ophthalmic ointment and drops is indicated for the following infections-

  • Eye infections
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Conjunctivits
  • The dosage can range between 200-400 mg depending upon the type and severity of infection.
  • For oral drops the usual dosage is 1 drops 2-3 times daily.
  • For ophthalmic ointment, Instill 2-3 times daily 1 drop into the lower conjunctival sac.

The common side effects caused by Lomefloxacin include-

  • Nausea and other gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Headache & Dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Skin rashes
  • Long QT syndrome
  • It can also halt bone and cartilage growth.

For ophthalmic preparation, the most commonly reported side effect is-

  • Eye irritation/burning sensation
  • Dosage adjustment maybe required for patients with renal impairment.
  • While taking lomefloxacin and for several days afterward, avoid exposure to direct or indirect sunlight (even while using sunscreens or sun blockers). When you see the first indications or symptoms of phototoxicity, you should stop using lomefloxacin right away. Taking lomefloxacin in the evening may lessen the risk of phototoxicity.
  • The patient should be informed that peripheral neuropathies have been associated with lomefloxacin use. If symptoms of peripheral neuropathy including pain, burning, tingling, numbness and/or weakness develop, they should discontinue treatment and contact their physicians. 
  • Long term usage may cause overgrowth of resistant organisms like C.difficile and Candida sp.
  • Convulsions have been reported in patients receiving lomefloxacin.

Contraindication

Lomefloxacin is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the antibiotics of quinolone class such as-

Oral lomefloxacin should not be taken with-

  • Milk
  • Antacids
  • Mineral supplements

 

Oral lomefloxacin is contraindicated in-

  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Children under 18 years old
